circle-of-friends-award-1-150x150Look what I got! Thanks, Cindy!

Because I don’t blog-hop anymore (time constraints, industry stress, yadda yadda), I don’t have a list to pass this blog award to, but I wanted to post it here because it’s just so darn cute. Don’t ya think? (If you want to get to know some writers I dig, take a look at my sidebar.)

Other than that, nothing new here. I was supposed to be on writing break, but suddenly I have a book releasing Tuesday and galleys for another due in a couple of weeks. I’m also considering starting something new, so…not much of a break there. Oh, well, it was fun while it lasted!

I have paperbacks!

Sorry about the flash. I was excited and took pictures while the books were still in the shipping box (hence the crumpled white packing paper on the left), and I certainly wasn’t going to take time to adjust the camera settings.

The question is, do I keep them all under my pillow (or maybe on a special ”ME” bookshelf, lol) or give them away?

One man and a clue

rosesValentine’s Day sparks quite the controversy. Some people eat up the opportunity to do something special for their loved ones; others hate it because they don’t think people should be forced to give out cards on a designated day—why not be romantic any time?

I do get a kick out of the gaggle of men who pack greeting card aisles each February 13, but there’s nothing like a well-planned Valentine gift to bring out one’s appreciation for the scheduled mushy stuff. Take these photos, for instance, which I came across from Valentine’s Day 2004. The picture above is a close-up of two bouquets of roses that were delivered to my door that day. No, not a secret love on the side, just a really awesome husband who apparently had some extra money that year. :)

As if that weren’t enough, he also stole a few additional note cards from the florist and planted them all over the house, each announcing yet another reason he loves me.  (Mush alert!!)  cards

I mean, seriously. This isn’t a guy who darts into Hallmark at the eleventh hour. (He saves last-minute stuff for Christmas Eve. Kidding, dear…)

Men, take note. There’s no love in grabbing the nearest red envelope and running for the checkout counter. When there’s no love, there’s no love. Get my drift? (And we have two kids. If he can do it, you can do it.)

You’d think it would be hard to impress a woman who writes romance novels and listens to kinky R&B songs, therefore her mind is always filled with things the hunkiest of men should do, but he’s good. We also happened to get a very rare accumulation of snow that morning, so I found this on the back deck:

Yeah, I’m lucky. Now if I could just get him to clean the bathroom…

Do you have any romantic Valentine’s Day stories? If not, go make one, and have a great weekend!

Crossroads

Monday, February 8th, 2010

According to common sense and several articles I’ve read (please don’t ask me to quote sources!), there are three major deal-breakers in a relationship: abuse, addiction, and infidelity. In other words, if your significant other is guilty of any of these, run the other way. They won’t change.

Fortunately, my husband is a gem and I don’t have a problem there. But like relationships, careers are subject to deal-breakers too. Sometimes, you reach a crushing moment where you realize you have to end things. No matter how much you love him (her, it, the job). No matter how much it hurts and how lost you feel starting over, this particular thing happened and continuing down the same path would reap more harm to your self-respect than it would rewards.

Last week, this is where I found myself—at the lowest point of the dizzying roller-coaster of publishing, an industry that tosses a writer around like a kid’s inflatable bouncy-house (but isn’t nearly as much fun!). I’m happy to say that today, I received a shining example of the way I believe this business should work. My faith is somewhat restored. At least, it might be creeping back up the next hill on the coaster.

I have discovered a few things as of late: my current publisher, Samhain, is a wonderful place (no, the above was not a rant about them, lol). Small houses are a pleasure to deal with. Digital publishing is awesome. My Kindle is really cool and I’ve been reading a lot more since I got it. I encourage you to do the same—check out small and digital publishers. Check out new—or new-to-you—authors. Take a look at e-readers. You’ll be surprised.

I apologize for being scarce, as I may continue to be for the next few weeks, while I regroup and the vision of my writing future takes on a new shape. Those of you I’ve talked to recently will be pleased to know that I still believe I have a writing future. But it will take some time to get things moving again. I sincerely hope to have a new e-book available some time this year, but to hold you over until then, my first paperback, Sexy by Design, releases on Tuesday, March 2. It will be available (and is already available for pre-order) at Borders, Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and several other outlets.

Thank you to my readers and my writer friends for your support thus far, and for tolerating this cryptic message as an explanation for my long blog absences. I hope to be back with a bang (literally, lol) shortly.
